Where is NAD? Re: Daphne Wright's case

Extremely disappointed in NAD.

Hi, i dont think NAD can get involved (I could be wrong) as it has lawyers that are certified to work in civil cases only. If they need to deal with criminal cases, they would need to get lawyers that specialize in that area. I dont know why they dont have it, maybe their non profit status prevents them from doing it as it costs money.

I am not sure about the role of NAD, as an advocacy organization, in monitoring that deaf people's civil rights aren't being violated. From what I have observed, NAD seems more concerned about the closed captioning and ADA issues at the national level. Maybe NAD isn't involved in grassroot advocacy of civil rights as a watchdog. This is a good question. Why is it so different from the advocacy of NAACP?

One shouldn't confuse NAD and NAD Law Center. I think NAD Law Center, as a legal clinic, is very different from NAD. The deaf person may need to contact NAD Law Center for services after their civil rights are violated.

I think NAD should involved to do something to Daphne's court trial and other Deaf people who goes to prison if not for death penalty. NAD are whole supporter for DEAF. I think NAD might want to hand off to keep "Gold" image itself from loser.

The only reason NAACP (sp?) gets involved in high public cases is to get public recognition and propel them to elite status. NAD has different goals. You can view their goals on their website and by watching the NAD Prez's blog in which they are moving forward, in what direction, that remains to be revealed.

I dont thin anyone wants their tax money to be spent on criminals. Imagine if NAD were to help deaf criminals, what will their stance be? Its very dangerous move,i could not fathom seeing NAD working with deaf criminals especially if they committed terrible murders like Daphne. Would you want your membership money go to helping our deaf criminals?? Perhaps the ACLU should set up an chapter that deals with deaf criminals. I dont know what kind of money NCLU receives and if its nonprofit or not?? I can understand NAD's recluance in getting involved as that would imply that they support the criminals.

Advocacy of deaf person's civil rights in the judicial system is very important. Who is looking out if a deaf person's civil rights are not being protected by the judges? In the last several months, I have been hearing more and more how many deaf people fail miserably in the court system due to interpreting problems. The deaf people are really at the mercy of the judges woefully ignorant of ADA.

It doesn't matter what kind of trial is being held. It applies to traffic court, family court, juvenile court, criminal court, civil rights court, and so forth. You get the idea.

Many people complain that NAD don't care about grassroot deaf people. This is nothing new. Same old NAD, do nothing.

I understand your disappointment in NAD - are you a NAD member? If not, sign up! Be a NAD member, get your friends involved with NAD. Be proactive, see what you can do to make sure that this doesn't happen again.

Nothing will get done if we all sit around and whine. We need to get proactive!!

I'd disagree with some commenters. NAD was founded to protect deaf people's civil rights, including the American Sign Language. Also it includes equal rights for all interpreting services. TV was not invented until 70 years later. If NAD focuses on CC only, then it's not worth joining NAD, period. We
should found a new association like NAACP to protect deaf people's
civil - equal rights.

Anon,

I've contacted NAD prez twice some time ago to discuss about increasing activism in the Deaf Community and received no response. That doesn't make me feel motivated to join NAD. In fact, it made me wonder about NAD. My thinking is, if we get other deaf people to become proactive, we will become a powerful group, advocating for our rights with FCC and ADA, etc. Other organizations made me feel welcome, even though I'm Deaf and I worked with them.

So I asked other Deaf people about this lack of response. Two said this is unusual, this doesn't sound like her. However others said, nothing new. Maybe that is NAD, too cliquey? I don't know.

NAD Law Center is very different. The director was very helpful three weeks ago.

hey

you made me wonder about....

she is black. is NACCP involved?

she is lesbian. any lesbian/gay organizations involved?

she is woman. any woman organization involved?

she is deaf. any deaf organizations involved?

she is disabled? any disabled organization involved?

so far I read none of them involving her case.

deaf community seems to be tuning to her murder trial. I would not be surprised the organizations are watching it closely.

deaf eduacation is on trail. her school did not help her to get services she needed when she had problems at school. is it act of racism or what? they mentioned deaf average reading is 3rd-4th grade level. most deaf schools are not doing their job to raise up their education. hope it is wake up call for deaf schools.

Maybe NAD needs to hear more honest feedback from Deaf Community. Diane, you are speaking aloud what many Deaf people complain privately. .

NAD used to be strong advocate for civil rights of Deaf many decades ago. NAD doesn't have a good image anymore. Sad

I'm speechless! What about South Dakota Association of the Deaf? Is it in any way affiliated to NAD? Every one has a certain boundary that separates it from others. Daphne Wright is a Deaf black lesbian, and she has four boundaries: deafness, race, sex orientation, and woman. Of those boundaries, which is the most difficult to define? Deafness.

Daphne's case is a big news because she may be the first woman and .... Deaf person who may face a death penalty for the first time in 60 years. The society needs to be taught about the Deaf rights and so on. Think about that. NAD should be there if Deaf is criminal or not. What A BIG IF the Deaf person with a very low IQ arrested and unable to speak up for his/her rights. What if that person is innocent! Could happen to ALL of us no matter what. Life is complicated out there.

Deafschooled, I agree with you.
NAD is not really that powerful.
I heard a true story about NAD vs a king of ABC card deaf peddlers in Chicago in 1940's or earlier. NAD told the judge that deaf peddlers should be charged. The peddler king asked the judge if he wanted to hire some deaf people to work for him. the judge hammered and let the peddler go free.

NAD cannot do everything with small amount of money!

NAD don't have many staff. NAD must watch the budget.

Are you a member of NAD? If not, quit complaining. Me proud as a member of NAD.

I know NAD did a lot for us, but many of you are blind!

"Hearing psychologists who knows nothing about deaf"? Not true, Dr. McCay Vernon is a well respected hearing psychologist with a long & intensive speciality/involvement in the deaf community.

I agree with you on that the NAD should get involved. I also think that the National Black Deaf Advocates organization should get involved too. I think that both of organizations should work with each other, like sending their representatives to Daphne's court trial. They should be there in person to ensure that the ADA rights of Daphne are protected. If Daphne and her lawyers decide to appeal for another court trial, the NBDA and NAD representatives must be there 100 % of their times.

Wow,other prefect example for me about NAD, May I share with you about my impression of NAD,I am sorry for taking long time to post this comment as time really consumed too fast on me,I have a towing company here in NC as our business grow bigger and heavier, I decided to add a bigger tow truck into my fleet to meet our heavy duty towing demands and we applied for a USDOT(US Dept of transportation) number to put on my own tow truck and got it with no problem but when a DOT auditor came to inspect our fleet last OCT 2005 they found out I am DEAF then they throw the federal DOT regulation 391.41 section 11 at us that got us mad then got involed legal battle since then over that regulation until it's be revised. We(our lawyer included)already called, emailed NAD shortly after what Federal DOT did to us and they reponded us back and told us they were not able to help us out and gave us the impression that there was hopeless to have this regulation to be revised but we found out that NAD already tried this before but lost and buried it some years ago and will not able to help at all so forget NAD we went other aveune by wrote our state congressman, Howard Coble a letter and had two personal visits with him which he is most important key player at Federal DOT he got few regulations revised like Insulin dependant drivers able to drive trucks now, ok sorry for sum up but just want to make my point here about this example of how NAD's leadership are now which there got too many deaf truck drivers out there do need help where NAD seem neglected em so long time and would like you to know that I am with you wondering about what's up with NAD.
