Several friends of mine knew that murder victim. They all told me how hard it was for them to see that bent rail, so they avoided that path. I've always wondered why it wasn't removed promptly out of respect for the grieving classmates who knew him. Likewise, I found it creepy to see that dented rail.
wow if still there, that is so dumb! I agree, should have it replaced or fixed. It is just pure common sense! Did you bring it up when you were student? It is creepy. I also wonder about the room, did they change it to all purpose room or kept it as a dorm room? I think it should be changed for other purpose. I know someone (RA) who brought someone I know into that room out of curiosity. Perhaps if that room is used for something meaningful, it would be nice and shows respect to the person that was murdered in that room.
I am surprised, i thought out of all the world, they would have the decency to replace it.
Its been a long time ago since that happened. Why didnt anyone speak up back then, me wonder?
Also for ben varner and craig plunkett, did they convert their dorm room to something else?
On the highways, i would see dented gates or whatever, they dont bother to replace or paint them. So you can see the evidence of accident marks on it, im sure the victims families probably have gone by it too. Maybe its very expensive and difficult to remove.
Yes, it is definitely still there. In fact, almost everytime I get on Gallaudet campus, I do check the rail myself for some reasons. It happened in 1981, I believe, and my brother was there and I never forgot the incident. Therefore, you brought up a valid point that it should be removed.
Now I wonder when it will be removed? I hope this will get to Gallaudet Administrators to realize that it needs to be replaced.
It will be probably $100 or so to do that - no excuse to delay on this.
Yeah, it should definitely REMOVED that portion of rail. It could be a very little cost, like around 100 dollars to do that job -- its really no excuse regardless. It should be paid due respect for the murder victim. Lot of times, like in other "well-known" murder events anywhere in other college places, the adminstrator usually, in fact, do the swift action to get something done -- to make it look "completely clean" like its *look* like no murder occured there. Maybe the victim (i think he's from Canada not sure) didn't do anything too *drastic* to have something that murder event (in 1981) a real tradegy ... like you see what had happened to Va Tech shooting -- I am absolutely sure they will do all the "coverings" be complete -- to make all rooms, halls, etc look like no murder. Now its a real shame to have that "poor" university like Gallaudet (oh of course I support Gally absolutely, but the adminstrators didn't do very effectively) to have that portion damaged rail be SEEN even today. HOW SAD ... I hope Gally have a change of heart to make Gally very strong University as presenting the Deaf needs. Yeah, the murderer (i know where he is and he is completely free but still on probation for life) seems get away from that. How shame.
Truly respect all the victims !!!! On both murder scenes -- in 1981 and in 2005 too. Be sure they are well-earned to be kindly respectful from Gally University as whole.
I was among those standing there as the police and ambluance took care of things. It was a shock for the entire campus. When I visited Gally with friends I tend to point it to them.
During Gallaudet just hosted 1984 Sports Tryout events for Los Angeles Deaflympics 1985. The former Gallaudet tennis player mentioned about rail damaged by student fall from high floor it happened in early 80's. I did saw it. Of course I had been visited Gallaudet and it's been there. They don't do anything to replace the rail.
Yes, the guy who was killed was from E. C. Drury School for the Deaf in Milton, Ontario Canada. The guy was in preparatory program.
I was shocked to learn that he was thrown out of 8th floor (807). Before that I lived on 707 a year ago. I used to open the window and see upward and downward (crazy boy I was) and chatted. I had never thought that it happened. I was not there at that time beceuase of summer orientation. I went back to Gally a couple of weeks later. Some of my friends who went there during orientation quit Gally due to their shock of the horrible incident.
I remember seeing that bent rail when I was a student at Gally back in 2001. I did wonder the same thing myself.
Strangely, the entry to the dorm room where the murder took place was sealed off. I remember someone telling me about it and checking it out, and it was weird seeing a missing door. Strange that they would do that, but not fix the bent railing?
It was August of 1980. I remember because I had returned to DC to work at the National Center for Law and the Deaf after graduating from Georgetown U Law School in May. I had been away up in MA studying for and taking the MA bar then returned to DC to start my job at NCLD. Really sad incident. Sheila Conlon Mentkowski
Jean Boutcher - wondering if Dr. Davila has his email address at Gallaudet. I can't find it ... I did looked up the GreatIdeas@Gallaudet.edu. Well I hope Dr. Davila read our comments here. I know He's been busy.
Yeah, I have heard about it from time to time when I was student there. Indeed, it is sad. Will it be more helpful if anyone who is willing to take photo of that bent rail and put it online via this blog or www.deafread.com for Deaf people who may like to see it cuz they either never visited Gallaudet before but have heard about it or would like to visit Gallaudet to see what bent looks like but don't have time for various of reason? I thought that with photo being seen online saves their trip to Gallaudet.
Take a pic of that rail? Nah - no need to because it is too sad. If I were next to that rail at Benson Hall, I would just take it out with the chainsaw. :-)
I remember that in 1980. I entered Gally as a freshman so I lived in Krug Hall. My parents got a letter from the president explaining about this event. Glad that I or my parents never thought about leaving. Wish we saved that letter.
I never went to college all my life so That Sad Story of it .. Should have Remove cause Being bother peolpe remind of it what happend so Dont need to remind of it ... You know what I am talk about it . Nice see you around sara or Shrimpy :-)
As myself, I graduated from Gallaudet in year of 2002. I never realized that the rail was still there, wow. I always walked thru that stairs at Benson Hall to the fields. I never recognized myself about the rail there and I think I must be blind myself. By the way, I already contacted some of my friends to ask them if they can check this rail is still there or not. I also contacted Gallaudet Administrators about that, too and I added to this blog to show them because we are concerned. I hope that Gallaudet will fix this real soon! Yeah, NO excuse to remove or fix it! Look at Freshman dorms have been changed after murders in year 2001 and why not the rail removed or fixed, yet? What a ironic?

I graduated from Gallaudet in 2004. Yes, the rail is still bent. The story is still around about the murder at Gallaudet.

Out of respect for the student, perhaps you would consider asking Dr. Davila to do something about that at GreatIdeas@gallaudet.edu.

Yep .. it is time to remove the creepy rail!
Geez, if they fix Krug and Cosgwell dorm by changing names and all why can't they just remove the darn rail a long time ago. I hated that rail.
LIFE IS TOO PRECIOUS!! The students don't need to continue on with the stories... We need to move on....
